Free-time as a reinforcer in the management of classroom behavior

Want to learn more about the evidence behind Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with Deaf and hard of hearing learners? Look no further! Our latest Continuing Education Unit (CEU) offering is a review of Dr. J. Grayson Osborne’s article “Free-time as a reinforcer in the management of classroom behavior” published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis (JABA) in 1969.

In the late 1960s, Dr. Osborne established an ABA research laboratory at the New Mexico School for the Deaf. It was the first lab of its kind to use ABA techniques specifically with Deaf students, making it a groundbreaking achievement in the field. This study highlights the effectiveness of reinforcing positive behavior in the classroom, specifically through the use of free-time as a reinforcer for sitting quietly and focusing on academic work. The research shows that by offering brief periods of free-time as a reward for in-seat behavior, teachers can increase the amount of time students spend engaged in academic work.

Participants are asked to think about how the students’ Deafness may have impacted their behavior and the results of the study.
